Darin Shot Great But Came Up Just A Dart Or Two Short In A Very Close Match On The Opening Day At Purfleet!
The final match of the first session was between Dutchman Josephus Schenk and American Darin Young. Young had played in front of the TV camera's before at the Las Vegas Desert Classic, but for 24-year-old Schenk it was his TV debut. However, it was the Dutchman who prevailed 3-2.
Schenk set off on fire with a 180 in the first leg but Young clung on in there to take it - and the first four legs were shared before Schenk won the decider for a 1-0 lead.
The second set looked like it was going to follow suit as Schenk started with
a 142 checkout, however, Young sprung in to action to take the next three
legs and level the match.
At this stage both players were averaging 85 which is respectable for their first time at the Circus Tavern.
Schenk then won the next set 3-1 and when he started the fourth with a 13 dart leg, the writing looked to be on the wall for Young. But to the American's credit, he reeled off the next three legs to take the set and level the match once more.
The momentum was now with Young and when he checked out 132 (25, T19 & bull) he looked to be heading for victory. But Schenk showed class and fighting spirit to win the next three legs on the spin for victory to set up a second round match with Alan Caves tomorrow, and on this form, deadly on his doubles and consistent scoring, he may fancy his chances.
AFTERNOON SESSION REVIEW - 2ND ROUND
Dutch qualifier Josephus Schenk put up the most
impressive performance of the world championship to date as he knocked
out world No. 25 Alan Caves 3-0.
The 24-year-old, who beat American Darin Young yesterday only dropped three legs on his way to victory to set up a third round encounter with three time world championship finalist Peter Manley, and it could be a restless night for One Dart.
3RD ROUND
Schenk continued his run at the title by defeating Manley in the third round. Josephus Schenk produced one of the biggest shocks in world championship history as he knocked out No.3 seed Peter Manley 4-2. Wins over Darin Young and Alan Caves had helped Schenk reach the top of his game and who knows what he can achieve now.
Fellow qualifier Andy Hamilton caused another shock in the third round as he knocked out the 1996 Embassy World Champion Steve Beaton 4-2.
FINAL 16 ROUND
Hamilton then ended Schenk's dream run in the final 16 round 4-1.
It makes you wonder just how far Darin might have gone if he had only gotten past Schenk!
